On the Workbench: 6mm WW2 & Terrain

This is the start of a thread to provide the reader with regular updates on what is currently on my workbench and progress towards various projects.

After Waterloo my first job was to rebase the command bases and all skirmishers that were still on 3 figure bases. This is now complete apart from a few additional command figures to be painted. Here is the finished Prussians.

The next painting job are WW2 Brit Paras for the forthcoming Op Market Garden scenario 'Battle in the Woods'. This is about a dozen figures short of the 2nd battalion to be completed (All are Heroics & Ros). There are 5 Napoleonic command figures that will be painted at the same time. This is to standardise my new command bases which are now 7 figures per army command, 5 per Corps C/O, 3 per Div C/O and 1 per Brigade C/O or ADC

I felt it was about time I spruced up my commercially built terrain tiles which are now around 20 years old. First up were the narrow river tiles. The bare brown painted riverbanks looked a little naff. I decided to reduce the size of the banks by gluing on more scatter material and also make the exposed earth a little more natural.

I began by gluing on a layer of sand at the water's edge creating a new narrow earth bank.

This was then painted with a brown wash before drybrushing. The original earth brown banks were then painted in a green emulsion.

And Finally the scatter material was glued onto the green areas. I also took the opportunity of repairing any slight chips that had occurred over the years.
I need to crack on with figure painting so the terrain tile upgrades will be done in slow time alongside the figures. I had considered repainting the 'water' but that may be one for the future.

  1. A bold move to tamper with the tiles, but the modification looks great. My first Baccus 6mm arrived today (as a result of your blog), a bag each of Napoleonic French infantry and cuirassiers, plus some latex roads and resin bridges, just to get an impression of how practical the scale is for me.

    1. Thanks Richard. I can confirm that the next battle due on my board will be either N.Africa or a WOTR Kingmaker game. If the latter then the N.Africa game will follow that. Just clearing some outstanding painting and terrain work before setting the board up.

I will be posting later today my collection totals and current projects.

    2. Great look forward to it. Have you ever considered putting on a game at Joy of Six i'm sure Pete at Baccus would be delighted to have your Waterloo game there. We are putting on a massive D Day game in 2019 for the 75th Anniversary.
      Cheers

    3. I fear that putting on my Waterloo at the Joy of Six would be too daunting. It took me 4 days to set everything up. But nice thought though. Your D Day games sounds fascinating. I will see if I can make the trek as a punter to see it. What rules will you be using?
